Course Offerings


HONORS: The Honors program is offered to grades 9-12 and provides accelerated study of grade level skills with emphasis on vocabulary, literature, thinking skills, FCAT preparation, writing, and enrichment activities. Placement in Honors classes is based upon FCAT Reading scores as well as teacher recommendation.

Advanced Placement (AP): The ninth and tehnth grade Honors programs lead to AP classes in the eleventh and twelfth grade. These classes provide the student with an opportunity to do new and more challenging work. This program is for those students who dare doing well in English and plan on further education beyond the High School experience. They should be able to read and write well, and have mastered basic skills, and be self-motivated. Selection for this program is based on FCAT scores, teacher recommendations, attendace, and the previous year's English grades.

Intensive Reading

The purspose of this course is to improve competencies in reading, as measured by FCAT. Students will be placed in this course based on scroing below the passing score as required to meet the graduation requirement. Transfer students who have not yet taken FCAT will be assessed using another placement test to determine if the student must be placed in this course. Students will receive an elective credit for this course. This remediation is required under FL 1008.25 and may be required as a 90 minute block.

English I
English I Honors

Required for graduation, English I is designed to strenghten students' mastery of language skills necessary for effective communicaton and understanding of literature. Students meeting district standards will be scheduled according to their individual needs as determined by their performance on FCAT, teacher recomendation, and student ability

English II
English II Honors

Focusing on world literature and composition, English II offers a variety of language arts experiences. Students will be scheduled according to their performance on the FCAT, available reading test scores, previous language arts achievement, tecaher recomendation, and student ability.

English III
English III Honors
AP English Composition

Focusing on American literature and compositionns, students will be scheduled according to teacher recommendation, FCAT and student ability.<B>Students enrolled in Honors of AP English must also be enrolle din English SAT/ACT Prep.</b>

English IV
English IV Honors
AP English Literature

Credit for English IV satisfies the graduation requirement. The content of this course will include British literature and other language arts experiences.

Creative Writing 1 and 2

In these courses, students practice and implement various modes of language arts skills within the context of the workspace. The content includes, but is not limited to reading, writing, listening and speaking skillos and higher level thinking skills. Students in the level 2 course will be working on VOICE, the school's literary magazine.
