Success Updates

Fellow Raiders,
Quick update on your Raider lacrosse program. We started the long weekend with our home opener against Cypress Lake HS. Matthew Flint scored four goals in a 10-9 nail-biter that went to the wire after a series of stick penalties incurred by our team. Mistakes that won’t happen again! The tough Raider defense did a fantastic job of holding off Cypress Lake’s potent offense and our boys controlled the ball for the last five minutes of the game.

Yesterday, the boys defeated Port Charlotte 16-1. Riverdale dominated from the start, driving the score to 10-0 at halftime. In the third and fourth quarters, the boys were directed to run plays and work on passing only. An important lesson in sports is to play fair and with class—it’s never acceptable to needlessly run up the score on an opponent. Riverdale has been on the short end of that stick in the past; and it’s not a fun experience. When Port Charlotte’s frustration turned into cheap shots our boys maintained their cool and walked away from swinging sticks and crosschecks.

The girls team lost 15-5 to Cypress and, after a 3-2 first half, lost to Port Charlotte by a score of 9-3. The girls lost some key players after last season making for a tough start to the 2017 season. Even though she’d never even seen a lacrosse game before, junior Cari Coffey stepped up to play goalie. She’s made some amazing saves while senior captain Sasha Serrano anchored a defense comprised of novice players and new varsity starters.

If you’ve never been to a Raider lacrosse game, why not come out this Friday against visiting Golden Gate. The girls will play at 5 and the boys at 7!

Have a great day!

Respectfully,
Richard Williamson
