Our games against Estero High School did not go as well as we’d hoped. The girls lost 15-5, the boys fell 11-5. Apparently 5 was our max for the day!

Game Summary:
Both games were within 2 or 3 goals at half. The boys suffered from penalties like a bad call that resulted a 2-minute "unreleasable" in the first quarter of the boys game; cost three goals. Afterwards, a series of good calls left us a man-down for more than 6 minutes in the second half. The girls have a patchwork defense (after losing a few players from last year); so this is an expected building year.

Coaches' View:
Realistically, our players’ lack of experience, compared to other teams' levels, is the real source of our defeats. For example, our average length of play on both Riverdale teams is about two years. The average experience for Estero is 6 years. I coached some of them when they were 10 years old; in fact--with one attacker having played eleven years! Even though lacrosse has been at Riverdale since 2008, it’s still an oddity to our community. Our importance in our community is something we are working to elevate. Our coaches do "learn-to-play" programs, two summer camps, and a rec league to continue to generate interest in our area. Most of those kids will be Raiders one day—and then THEY will be the ones with 6 years of playing experience!

But, for teams of relatively new players, we are really doing well!

One of our successes this week was our trash pickup on campus here at Riverdale. The boys and girls teams fanned out and picked up a total of 8 large bags of trash from around the grounds! Drink bottles and food wrappers were the most common items found, along with literally hundreds of cut off zip ties from posters and banners. We are always after our players to “leave it like you found it,” and we hope you will find the campus a little cleaner!
