At the conclusion of each high school season, The News-Press staff sends area coaches a nomination form to select and rank players for our aAl-area first team and to also nominate athletes for honorable mention. A combination of The News-Press’ research and the coaches’ player rankings lead to the teams being selected and three athletes being named finalists for player of the year. The three finalists are invited to The Southwest Florida Sports Awards to be held Wednesday, May 23 at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall, where a player of the year for each will be announced along with other honors. Former Major League Baseball player John Kruk will be the featured speaker. Tickets for the event can be purchased at sportsawards.news-press.com.

Player of the Year Finalists

Edward Brown

School: LaBelle

Year: Senior

Weight: 139

Highlights: Brown finished third in the state with a combined lift of 475 pounds, took second in District A-15 and third in Region A-8.

Santiago Morales

School: LaBelle

Year: Senior

Weight: 119

Highlights: Morales won his second state title with a 455-pound combined lift, including a state record of 250 in the clean and jerk. He went undefeated at 119 for the season, including district and regional titles.

Keenan Walker

School: Riverdale

Year: Junior

Weight: 199

Highlights: Walker took first in District 2A-14 with a combined lift of 600 pounds, first in Region 2A-7 by lifting 610 pounds and qualified for state, placing 10th with a combined 585.

First Team

Felix Flores

School: LaBelle

Year: Senior

Weight: 129

Highlights: Flores placed first in District A-15 with a combined lift of 385 pounds, took first in Region A-8, lifting 365 pounds and qualified for state where he finished seventh with a combined lift of 415.

Jamie Deras Jr.

School: LaBelle

Year: Junior

Weight: 139

Highlights: Deras placed third in District A-15 with a lift of 460 pounds, finished second in Region A-8 with 475 pounds and qualified for state, where he took fifth with a combined 465.

Harrison Strohl

School: Riverdale

Year: Junior

Weight: 169

Highlights: Strohl won District 2A-14 with a combined lift of 545 pounds, took third in Region 2A-7 with 535 pounds and qualified for state, finishing 10th with a combined 540 pounds.

Adrien Canty

School: Cape Coral

Year: Senior

Weight: 183

Highlights: Canty placed second in District 2A-14 with a combined lift of 555 pounds, took third in Region 2A-7 by lifting 550 pounds and qualified for the state meet.

Kyle Todd

School: Cape Coral

Year: Junior

Weight: 219

Highlights: Todd won at the District 2A-14 meet with a lift of 600 pounds, placed second in Region 2A-7 with 610 pounds and qualified for state, where he lifted 610 for 12th place.

Keegan Cage

School: Cape Coral

Year: Junior

Weight: 219

Highlights: Cage placed third in District 2A-14 with a combined lift of 550 pounds, was fourth in Region 2A-7 with 570 pounds and qualified for the state meet.

Cameron Neal

School: South Fort Myers

Year: Senior

Weight: Unlimited

Highlights: Neal placed fifth in District 2A-14 and fifth in Region 2A-7 with a combined lift of 610 pounds.

Coach of the Year

Maurice McClain

School: LaBelle

Highlights: McClain led LaBelle to runner-up spots at the district, regional and Class A state meets. He also had five lifters qualify for state with one bringing home a championship and two others earning medals.

They will be competing Saturday ,April 7th , in Panama City Beach. While being great athletes, they all are phenomenal in the classroom, all near the top of their class.

Boy’s Weightlifting Team kick off Season


The Boy’s Weightlifting Team will kick off the regular season schedule as they compete against the Estero Wildcats @ 4:00pm right here in our weight room.  Stop in and check out our athletes as they compete in the weight room.  It’s also an ideal time to support and interact with many of our student athletes in a competitive setting.  The athletes will be more up-close-and-personal than they would be in most other athletic settings.  Come see their smiles and
